Honoring Bishop Said

June 8 was a rainy Saturday, but spirits in Trinity Cathedral were bright as the diocese celebrated the ministry of Bishop Suffragan John Said and his wife Ann.

A congregation of about 400 people gathered to honor the diocese's first bishop suffragan, who was consecrated at the cathedral Feb. 25, 1995, and will retire at the end of August. The procession included not only five bishops (Diocesan Bishop Leo Frade, Bishop Said, Assistant Bishop James Ottley, retired Diocesan Bishop Calvin O. Schofield, Jr. and Bishop David Richards) and more than 60 other clergy, but also 14 persons who are in the process toward ordination. In recent years, Bishop Said has worked closely with the Commission on Ministry and has supported the vocations of many who are now aspirants, postulants, candidates and seminarians.

In his sermon, Cathedral Dean Donald W. Krickbaum, who also preached at Bishop Said's consecration, spoke of " faithfulness and caring, prayer and compassion" as "the unique marks of the Christian community", and said that the bishop and his wife "model the actions of men and women who know and love God, and who seek to serve him and his church".

Bishop Leo Frade told the congregation that Bishop Said's ministry has been "a great blessing" to him in the first years of his own episcopate in Southeast Florida. He presented the Saids with a letter that he called an "IOU" for the $28,465.24 given by parishioners throughout the diocese as a retirement gift, explaining that additional gifts are still being received, so a check for the full amount will be written at the end of the summer.

Retired Bishop Calvin O. Schofield, Jr., welcomed Bishop Said to "the ranks of retired bishops", and also expressed his gratitude for the years they worked together.

At the Eucharist, Bishop Said asked the congregation to "pray for Ann and me at least once in a  while" and to pray "for this diocese, that we may be true to the gospel by asking God primarily what he would have us do".

The celebration continued after the service with a reception in the cathedral hall.
