July 2010

We hope everyone's getting some time for rest and recreation this summer, but we know this is far from a vacation season for many of our neighbors.
There are resources at our Disaster Preparedness and Response link concerning the oil disaster in the Gulf--a direct link for the Volunteer Florida , as well as links to prayers for this situation. The Episcopal Church has recently posted a number of additional prayer and liturgical resources. Donations to assist families whose livelihoods and businesses have already been hurt by the spill's impact on fishing communities can be made through Episcopal Relief and Development or Episcopal Community Services of Louisiana (click on "Donate" in the left-hand column, then select "Gulf Oil Spill Response Fund"). ER-D has also provided an informative bulletin insert.
Updated information about the situation in Haiti and how we can help continues to be posted at the new "Helping Haiti" link on the left side of our homepage at www.diosef.org, and Bishop Frade's report of his visit with Bishop Duracin last month is posted on his blog. Bishop Frade has asked that donations be directed to Episcopal Charities of Southeast Florida; contributions can be made online at www.ecsefl.org, or checks can be mailed to: Episcopal Charities of Southeast Florida, 8895 North Military Trail #205C, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410. Remember to include the people of Haiti in intercessory prayers at your Sunday services.

- Vacation Bible School - Are you looking for a good way to let parents in your community know that your church is planning an exciting Vacation Bible School program this summer-or if your church is not having VBS, do you want to help parents in your congregation find a program for their children? Young parents from Chapel of St. Andrew, Boca Raton, have created a website, www.sfvbs.com, where you can post your congregation's VBS plans or find information about VBS programs offered by other churches in your area.
- New rules on wireless microphones - Important information if your church uses wireless microphones: New rules by the Federal Communications Commission now restrict the frequency on which wireless microphones can operate. The 700 MHz Band became off-limits to wireless mics on June 12, 2010. That band now is dedicated to public safety agencies. Click here for registration and a link to the new 20010-2011 catalogue. Remember that the Diocesan School is not just for those in the process toward ordination, but is also for all laypersons who may wish to deepen their spiritual life and development or who seek training for lay ministries.
- Healthcare reform information from the Medical Trust - As the provisions of healthcare reform legislation begin to take effect, the Episcopal Church Medical Trust is providing answers to some frequently asked questions about how the new law might affect our benefits under the Medical Trust. It's important to note that: "The Medical Trust will not be making any changes to 2010 benefits" and "we have no intention of decreasing any current Medical Trust benefits that are in excess of new federal regulation requirements." Click here to download the complete Healthcare Reform FAQ document.
- Required training - All clergy serving actively in the diocese, as well as many lay employees and volunteers, especially in parish schools and youth programs, are required to have certification in the canonically mandated training for anti-racism and for prevention of child and adult sexual abuse. We are currently reviewing diocesan records from Safeguarding God's Children, Safeguarding God's People and anti-racism training, and clergy will be notified soon if we do not have records that they-or their parish or school personnel-have completed the required training.
- Diocesan Facebook page - Our diocese now has a new Facebook page, replacing our old Facebook "group" with a new location for photos from diocesan events, announcements of coming activities and links to information on our website and others around the Church. If you're on Facebook, become a fan of Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida.
- Diocesan Mission to Madagascar - There are still spaces available for the Diocesan World Mission Commission's mission to visit and work with our missionaries, Bishop Todd and the Rev. Patsy McGregor in Madagascar, Sept. 18-Oct. 1. The mission will be led by the Rev. Debra Andrew Maconaughey and her husband, Kirk. The cost varies somewhat by age of team members (due to insurance requirements, younger people pay less); the amount per person is between $2,315 and $2,445, with $1,500 of that amount covered by the diocese. These amounts do not include the cost of inoculations and visas. More information (and the place to go for future updates on the mission trip is the Madagascar Mission website. For additional information contact the Rev. Andrew Maconaughey, downtime66@hotmail.com.

The purpose of the convention is to make plans for diocesan youth events for the coming year, propose resolutions to bring to Diocesan Convention in November and elect members of the youth cabinet-president, vice-president, secretary and administrative assistant. Convention registration will be online at http://www.diosef.org/news-events/register-for-event.shtml. The cost per participant is $35.
