Although Hurricane Katrina’s effects in our diocese were minor compared with the devastation we’re seeing across the Gulf Coast, there was some damage. If you know of anyone in your parish who needs specific assistance in the aftermath of the storm, please call the Diocesan Office at 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, and let us know. If you need to file a claim with Church Insurance, the number is 800-223-5705. Claim forms can be downloaded at http://www.cpg.org/cms/content/536_institution.cfm

The Southeast Florida Episcopal Foundation has announced that emergency relief funds for churches and parishioners are available through the Smith Charity Fund. Complete information on these funds is available at http://www.diosef.org/katrina.html. That page also provides links to a packet of safety information for disaster relief volunteers and information on preserving water-damaged material.

Bishop Frade has asked that all parishes receive a special offering for hurricane relief as soon as possible. Donations for hurricane relief can be made by clicking on “donations” on our website, www.diosef.org, or through Episcopal Relief and Development, http://www.er-d.org/

He reminds us also to continue to support with our prayers everyone affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Click on the “Hurricane Katrina” box on the home page of the website for news from the dioceses affected by the storm and updates on how to participate in hurricane relief efforts, as well as for the text of Bishop Frade’s appeall and a message from the Presiding Bishop about Hurricane Katrina.

Bishop Frade’s Sabbatical—Bishop Frade is on sabbatical this month, visiting holy sites in Great Britain and then studying at St. George’s College in Jerusalem. Meetings and other commitments in early October mean that he will not be back in the diocese until the week of Diocesan Convention. Please keep the bishop’s travel and his studies in your prayers. During his absence, Bishop Ottley and Archdeacons Hobbs and Gray-Reeves will be available in the event of any pastoral emergency.

New web address—The diocesan website can now be accessed through a new web address, which we will be using in our advertising campaign: www.episcopalsouthflorida.org. For the foreseeable future, you will still find our site at www.diosef.org, but we think the new address will be easier to remember, especially when we are telling seekers how to find us.

Diocesan Convention—will be Oct. 21-22 at St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton. Please mark your calendar for these deadlines: Resolutions must be submitted by Sept. 6 and nominations by Oct. 3 (these go to the Secretary of Convention, Fr. Bernard Griffith, Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 330006, Miami, FL 33133); material to be included in convention packets must be in the Diocesan Office by Oct. 12, and the deadline for convention registration is also Oct. 12. Online registration at www.diosef.org/register.html will be available within a few days. For hotel reservations at Embassy Suites, Boca Raton, call 1-800-EMBASSY, and say that you are attending the Diocese of Southeast Florida Convention; the special room rate is not guaranteed after Oct. 7. Childcare for children ages 4-12 will be available at St. Gregory’s during the convention sessions both Friday and Saturday, as well as during the Eucharist. A donation of $10 is requested, and registration is necessary; the deadline is Oct. 14. To register, call Reta at St. Greory’s, 561-395-8285 or email stgreg@bellsouth.net. Childcare for the banquet is available through Alexandra’s Sitting Service (licensed and bonded), 561-702-1011; the deadline is Oct. 5. To reserve an exhibit table please email your request, prior to October 12, 2005, to Walter Stuart, wstuartvgr@bellsouth.net

Ad Campaign—The national Episcopal television ad targeted specifically at “GenX” persons (early 20s-early 40s) ran the weekend of Aug. 27-28 on a number of networks, and is scheduled to be shown again this month. If you missed it, you can see it online at www.episcopalchurch.org/adcollaborative; click on “Monitors”, in either English or Spanish. Please encourage friends you would like to invite to church to view it, too—it might be a good conversation-starter! Our diocesan advertising, also planned for this month, includes using the ad, and its audio and print versions, in public service announcements on local radio and television and in hometown newspapers throughout the diocese, from Key West up through Martin County, as well as ads in bus shelters. The cost of this advertising will be close to $15,000, so Bishop Frade has asked for donations to make sure the ad is seen and heard in our diocese during the time it’s shown nationwide. Donate online by clicking on "donations” on our website, www.diosef.org. Of course you can also mail a check payable to the Diocese of Southeast Florida, marked for "diocesan ad campaign", to: Diocese of Southeast Florida, 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132.

"Safeguarding God’s Children" training—Upcoming “Safeguarding God’s Children” classes are: Sept. 6, 1-4 p.m., Duncan Center (registration now closed); Sept. 10, 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Good Shepherd, Tequesta—call 561-746-4674 to register; Sept. 10, 8:30 a.m.-noon, Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines (for teachers, clergy, church leaders, parents, anyone working with children)--contact Herma Mowatt, Parish Administrator at Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church, 954-432-8686 to register; Sept. 10, 10 a.m. (French) at St. John the Apostle, Belle Glade—call 561-996-3662 to register; Sept 14, 6-9 p.m., St. Mary Magdalene, Coral Springs—contact Parish Administrator Margie Read, 954-753-1400, to register; Oct. 1, 9 a.m.-noon, St. Stephen’s, Miami—contact Fr. There will also be an additional training offered in French, Sept. 17, 11 a.m., at the Diocesan Office; contact Fr. Frantz Casseus, fcasseus@gbronline.com, or 305-305-769-4783. If your parish or school is offering a training session that will be open to those outside the parish, please contact Gail McShane, gail@diosef.org. All clergy officiating in this diocese, either canonically resident or licensed to officiate, must be certified as having completed this training by Dec. 31 of this year.

Duncan Center update—The Duncan Center has recently updated its website, www.duncancenter.org, with more information on programs and facilities. The Center would like its site to be linked to the websites of all parishes in the diocese—and to have all parish websites listed in its links. The Center is also asking for a person to be appointed in each parish to act as a Duncan Center liaison, to be sure parishioners know about programs and opportunities for spiritual development offered by the Center. For information on being a parish liaison, linking with the website or for the details of any Duncan Center program, contact Program Director Veneta Lorraine, at 561-496-4130 or vlorraine@adlephia.net

Staff positions open at Duncan Center—The Duncan Center needs to fill the following positions: Conference Coordinator (full time); Assistant Conference Coordinator (full time/part time); Bookkeeper/Accounting (part time 10 hours/per week); Housekeeper/ Kitchen Assistant (full time/part time);Grounds Keeper (part time 12 hours/week); On-Call Chef (part time). Call Fr. Steve Fregeau or Veneta Lorraine at 561-496-4130, or email safregeau@aol.com for information.

Taize worship and labyrinth walks—The Duncan Center now offers regular weekly services of Taize prayer and chant, led by the Rev. Nancy Wynen, on Monday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Schofield Chapel.  On Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30, Program Director Veneta Lorraine leads walking prayer and meditation on one of the Center’s two labyrinths.

Labyrinth programs with Lauren Artress—The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the organization that has reintroduced the labyrinth and walking meditation as spiritual tools, will be in residence at the Duncan Center for a series of labyrinth-related programs May 26-30, 2006. In addition to leading a labyrinth retreat May 26 and 27, Artress will offer a day with clergy, spiritual directors and retreat leaders on May 28 and labyrinth facilitator training May 29-30.

Anti-Racism Training—The Diocesan Anti-Racism Commission has announced an Anti-Racism Training workshop for Nov. 5 at St. Paul’s, Delray Beach. This training, which was mandated by General Convention for all clergy and lay leaders, was first offered in this diocese last November for diocesan staff, Executive Board and Standing Committee. The Commission intends to make these training workshops ongoing throughout the diocese and to involve as many people as possible. Watch for more details on the November workshop and future dates and locations for the training.

Follow-up on Multicultural Ministry—The theme of the Bishop’s Spring Conference, “One Body--Many Members” will be the focus of a two-day follow-up workshop Nov. 11 and 12 at the Duncan Center. (The workshop previously planned for Sept. 10 and 24 at St. Mark the Evangelist, Ft. Lauderdale, has been canceled due to schedule conflicts.) Watch for additional information on these. If you didn’t get one of the bright orange (for racial unity and social justice) wristbands with the E-Church logo and the words “Embrace Everyone”, or if you’d like to share the message, these can be ordered for $2 apiece from the diocesan office. Call 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, or email gail@diosef.org.

Movie preview--The Barna organization is beginning a series of quarterly movie preview nights for groups of 50 or more. The first of these will be an advance screening on Dec. 8 of Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media's production of the classic C.S. Lewis Story, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Seating in selected theaters will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so you will need to reserve tickets soon if you plan to take a group from your parish. For information and to request tickets, go to www.barnapreview.com.

Missions—The registration deadline for the Dec. 23-Jan. 10 mission to Kenya has been extended to Oct. 1. Contact Cheryl Harman, cmh103@aol.com for information about the trip and an Oct. 22 fund-raiser for Todd and Patsy McGregor’s ministries in Kenya. Holy Comforter, Miami, is planning a mission to their sister congregation, Holy Trinity, in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, Jan. 16-26, 2006. They are inviting others to join their team or to offer financial support for the mission. Details are at www.diosef.org/missions/HolyComfortermissionFlyer2005.pdf

Chapel furnishings needed—The Rev. Cruz Zenaida Cardona and the Spanish congregation at Church of the Resurrection, Biscayne Park, want to provide a chapel there, and are asking for donations of pews or chairs and other furnishings. If you have anything to offer, please call the diocesan receptionist, Jessy Soria, 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881.

PLSE--The PLSE ("pulse") program is an interdenominational effort with the dual purpose of nurturing young persons who want to explore a possible call to vocational church leadership, and developing a mentoring-guiding-shepherding process that encourages and lifts up those who explore or discern a call. PLSE maintains an interactive website, www.theplse.org, for young persons exploring a call to ministry and the people (including congregations) who support them. Diocesan youth ministry encourages high school and college students to visit the site and sign up online to become part of the conversation. Young persons who enroll in the site earn the title “PLSE Leader”—a good addition to college and job applications.

Ecumenical Youth Event—“Faith in 3-D”, an event for youth in grades 6-12 co-sponsored by the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church USA and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, will be held at Disney World, Jan. 13-16, 2006.  Faith in 3-D will explore what we have in common as Christians and how we celebrate our differences. There will also be time to participate in the Disney Youth Education Series, in which young people can experience life issues, world cultures and future opportunities. For more information, go to www.faithin3d.org.
