Staff changes—As we continue to live into our diocesan vision and mission, there have been ongoing changes in the organization of work in the Diocesan Office in order to provide more efficient and effective support for ministry. The position of scheduling secretary has recently been eliminated, which means that Estela Terrero, who faithfully served in the Diocesan Office in a number of capacities for many years, is longer with us. Scheduling and registration duties are being reorganized; please direct all calendar/schedule updates and requests for online registration for an event to Jim Carlton, jim@diosef.org or 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 16.

Diocesan Youth Ministry—Plans for a reorganization of Diocesan Youth Ministry continue to evolve. At their May meeting the deans will be working out procedures for organizing deanery-wide youth programs, and diocesan programs and events like Summer Camp and Youth Convention continue as planned. Click here for information on upcoming youth events. If you have questions about youth ministry, contact Mary Cobiella in the Diocesan Office, mary@diosef.org or 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 29.

Hurricane Preparedness—The diocesan Disaster Response Task Force has developed guidelines for disaster preparedness and response, which are now posted at  http://www.diosef.org/hurricane.html.   Bishop Frade urges each congregation to have a disaster preparedness and response plan in place by the June 1 beginning of hurricane season.

General Convention—Just about anything you want—or need--to know in preparation for General Convention is posted at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/53785_ENG_HTM.htm. Note that there are sections on that page specifically for the ECW Triennial Meeting and the Young Adult Festival, as well as an Episcopal News Service section that includes background articles on many aspects of General Convention and the legislative issues that will be addressed.  Bulletin inserts about General Convention issues can be downloaded after May 1 from http://www.episcopalchurch.org/3577_74048_ENG_HTM.htm. Resources for the Octave of Prayer from Pentecost (June 4) through Trinity Sunday (June 11) will also be posted soon.

Post-General Convention gathering—Bishop Frade is inviting all diocesan clergy to meet with him, Bishop Ottley and our General Convention deputies on Wednesday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Duncan Center for a report from General Convention and conversation on actions taken in our church-wide legislative assembly.

Grant Application Workshop--The Southeast Florida Episcopal Foundation is offering a Grant Application Workshop for those interested in applying for grants from the diocesan Human Needs budget and/or the Smith Charity Fund. The workshop will be May 2 from 10 a.m. to noon, with lunch included, at St. Mark the Evanglelist, Ft. Lauderdale. Registration is available online at www.diosef.org/register.html For more information contact Ellen Stone St. John, estonestjohn@adelphia.net. Applications for this year’s Smith Fund grants are available on the Foundation website at www.episfoundation.org/grant_app.html#3

“Safeguarding God’s Children”—There are two opportunities this month for this training: May 4, 6 p.m., at Trinity Cathedral, Miami; and May 13, 9 a.m., at St. Kevinb's, Opa-locka. Other classes have been added during the summer: Jun. 8, 1 p.m., at the Diocesan Office (registration available online at www.diosef.org/register.html ) and three classes in the North Palm Beach Deanery: Jun. 10, 8 a.m.-noon, Holy Trinity, West Palm Beach; Aug. 19 and Sept. 23, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach. (For information or to register, contact Reed Sprague at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, 561-665-4554, or Sprague@bbts.org .) All clergy officiating in this diocese, either canonically resident or licensed to officiate, should have been certified as having completed this training by Dec. 31, 2005; to accommodate those clergy new to the diocese, this deadline has been extended to July 31, 2006.

Parochial Reports—According to diocesan canons, each congregation is required to submit the annual Parochial Report (due Jan. 31 every year) in order to have seat, voice and vote at the Diocesan Convention. Reports that have not already been submitted must now be filed online through the national website of the Episcopal Church, at http://pr1.dfms.org; every congregation whose report for 2005 has not been received has been notified and given the password to access its report at this site. If you have not received your password, contact diocesan Chief Operating Officer Cris Valdes at 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 31, or by email, cris@diosef.org. Workbooks with complete instructions for completing the Parochial Report can be downloaded at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/research_62344_ENG_HTM.htm

Missing reports—As of Apr. 27, 13 congregations had not filed a complete Parochial Report, 32 had not submitted a Key Personnel list to the Diocesan Office and 32 had not submitted certification of delegate election. Click here for the complete record of reports submitted—and still missing.

Luncheon for Clergywomen—All clergywomen, active or retired, in the diocese, as well as women candidates for Holy Orders, are invited to a luncheon May 24, at noon, at the Duncan Center. The cost is $10. RSVP to the Rev. Nancy McCarthy, revnancy474@adelphia.net, by May 19.

Labyrinth programs with Lauren Artress—The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the organization that has reintroduced the labyrinth and walking meditation as spiritual tools, will be in residence at the Duncan Center for a series of labyrinth-related programs May 26-30. A labyrinth retreat, “The Labyrinth as Living Parable”, will be May 26 and 27. The cost for the entire retreat, including meals and lodging, is $275; the fee is $25 for the Friday evening session only. “Opening the Divine Imagination”, designed especially for clergy, spiritual directors and retreat leaders, will be 2-8 p.m. on May 28, at a cost of $65. Labyrinth facilitator training will be May 29-30. The cost is $105 payable to the Duncan Center for lodging and meals and $600 payable to Veriditas for the training. For additional information or to register for any of these events, call the Duncan Center, 561-496-4130 or email vlorraine@adelphia.net.

Vision-Mission “business card”—Everyone who attended the Bishop’s Spring Conference found in the packet a “business card” showing the main business of the diocese—our vision and mission. Click here to download the card, available in both Publisher and PDF formats, so you can print as many as you need to hand out to anyone who wants to know what the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Southeast Florida is about.

Paul Edwards cartoons and meditations—“The Rev” cartoons and meditations by Canon Paul Edwards, who led last fall’s clergy conference, are available on our website for viewing and downloading. Go to http://www.diosef.org/therev_cartoons.html to see what “The Rev” has to say for the seasons of Easter and Pentecost, as well as his new “Twenty Reasons Not to Leave the Church”. Canon Edwards has given permission for these to be reprinted in church bulletins and newsletters.

Volunteers needed—to serve on the committees, commissions, agencies and boards (CCABs) of the Episcopal Church's General Convention. The CCABs receive resolutions from General Convention and set policies for their implementation during the following three years until the next convention. Most CCABs meet between two and four times each year, and all members must agree to serve a six-year term. Recommendations are being accepted from now until 6 p.m. on June 20; a form for volunteering, or recommending people, to serve on CCABs for a six-year term is available at www.episcopalchurch.org/53785_73810_ENG_HTM.htm For more information, contact Sandy Webb at swebb@episcopalchurch.org

Bibles for seafarers - The Seamen's Church Institute of New York and New Jersey is collecting new Bibles in English or in any other language to distribute to seafarers from around the world. Bibles will be collected at the Institute's booth at General Convention, but anyone can participate in the "Word for the World" program by sending Bibles to: The Rev. Andy Moore, Director, International Seafarers' Center, 118 Export Street, Port Newark, NJ 07114. Foreign language Bibles can be purchased at Amazon.com or The American Bible Society Store (800-32-BIBLE), www.Bibles.com (http://www.bibles.com/) . Tagalog,
Russian and Ukrainian are the languages most needed. To learn more about
SCI, please visit www.seamenschurch.org (http://www.seamenschurch.org) .

Seminarians—Please continue to keep our seminarians to your prayer list; they need the support of their diocesan family as they prepare for ordained ministry. Currently attending seminary from our diocese are: Judith Alexis (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest (ETSS); Ian Barnes (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), St. Vincent de Paul; Matthew Cowden (Venerable Bede), Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS); Anne Harris (Chapel of St. Andrew), VTS; Scott Jones (St. Margaret’s, Miami Lakes), ETSS; Jeannie Martinez (St. Mary Magdalene, Coral Springs), VTS; Valerie Miller (St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton), Episcopal Divinity School (EDS); Scott Petersen (St. Benedict’s, Plantation), VTS; Wendy Tobias (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), VTS; and Rohani Weger (St. Simon’s, Miami), ETSS. Judith Alexis and Matthew Cowden are graduating this month; Mtthew was ordained to the diaconate Apr. 1.

PLSE--The PLSE ("pulse") program is an interdenominational effort with the dual purpose of nurturing young persons who want to explore a possible call to vocational church leadership, and developing a mentoring-guiding-shepherding process that encourages and lifts up those who explore or discern a call. PLSE maintains an interactive website, www.theplse.org, for young persons exploring a call to ministry and the people (including congregations) who support them. Diocesan youth ministry encourages high school and college students to visit the site and sign up online to become part of the conversation. Young persons who enroll in the site earn the title “PLSE Leader”—a good addition to college and job applications.
