May brings annual events that celebrate and support two important ministries in our parishes: the diocesan Acolyte Festival on May 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Grace Church, West Palm Beach, and the COPE Conference for parish lay staff, May 20-21 at the Duncan Center. Registration for both of these events is at www.diosef.org/register.html

The keynote speaker for this year’s Acolyte Festival is the Rev. Carol L. Wade, Priest Associate for Liturgy, Washington National Cathedral, and workshops will be offered on various aspects of acolyte ministry. Acolytes are asked to bring vestments, torches, thuribles, banners, kites and streamers for the procession and festive Eucharist. Each participating parish has been asked to nominate one acolyte for special recognition for outstanding service and dedication.

The COPE Conference is an opportunity for personal, professional and spiritual development for parish administrators, secretaries and other lay staff members, as well as a time to connect with others in the diocese who are involved in similar ministry. Some of the features of this year’s conference are: a workshop on using humor to relieve stress; an introduction to personal financial planning; labyrinth walks; yoga; and a panel discussion of how to make the best use of the skills of volunteers. Bishop Frade will meet with the group on Friday afternoon. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Friday, and the conference will end by 4 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $70 for overnight, and $35 for commuter; parishes are encouraged to provide this continuing education opportunity for their staff members.

Duncan Center—The date for the dedication of the Schofield Chapel at the Duncan Center has been changed from May 22 to June 19, at 5 p.m. Click here for other news of the Duncan Center.

Disaster preparedness—We hate to mention it, but…hurricane season is almost here. After last year’s experience, we hope every parish has plans in place to back up computer files, prepare the church property for a storm and stay in touch with parishioners in the event of any emergency. Please be sure that the diocesan office has phone numbers (particularly a cell phone number) for someone in the parish—in addition to the rector—who will be your contact person after a hurricane or other disaster.

Anti-Racism Training—The Diocesan Anti-Racism Commission has announced an Anti-Racism Training workshop for Nov. 5 at St. Paul’s, Delray Beach. This training, which was mandated by General Convention for all clergy and lay leaders, was first offered in this diocese last November for diocesan staff, Executive Board and Standing Committee. The Commission intends to make these training workshops ongoing throughout the diocese and to involve as many people as possible. Watch for more details on the November workshop and future dates and locations for the training.

End-of Life issues—On Mar. 28 Bishop Frade issued a Pastoral Letter dealing with issues raised by the case of Terri Schiavo. The letter is posted at http://www.diosef.org/easter_05.html The bishop called on clergy and vestries to encourage all church members to provide advance written directives outlining their wishes regarding their care in a situation in which they are no longer able to make their choices known. For additional information on planning for end-of-life medical decisions, contact Charlie Ring at the Southeast Florida Episcopal Foundation, 561-799-6424 or Charlie@episfoundation.org.

Revisions to Diocesan Canons--Any revisions to the Canons to be proposed at Diocesan Convention must be presented to the Constitutions and Canons Committee "not less than 90 days prior to the next Convention", which means not later than July 20, and then be presented to the delegates "not less than 30 days prior to Convention", which would be no later than Sept. 20.

Resources for parish communication and advertising—There are several websites that offer helpful resources for publicizing the Episcopal Church and the ministries of your parish. The “Groundwork” materials from the national church are available in English at www.episcopalchurch.org/groundwork and in Spanish at www.episcopalchurch.org/groundwork_56638_ENG_HTM.htm . Information from the Episcopal Advertising Collaborative is at www.episcopalchurch.org/adcollaborative ; the Episcopal Media Center is at www.episcopalmediacenter.org ; and the Church Ad Project is at www.churchad.com .

Grants for faith-based programs--If your parish is seeking funds for a human needs outreach ministry, a guide to 2005 federal funding opportunities for faith-based and community organizations can be downloaded from www.hhs.gov/fbci/CFBCI_M0374_GrantNotebook_FINAL.pdf  (Note: This is a very large PDF file, which will take some time to download. If you don’t have high-speed Internet access, you may want to ask someone who does to download it.) For additional information, call 202-358-3595. More information on grants can be found at http://www.grantstation.com/

Cursillo—If there is someone you feel called to invite to be a candidate for a Cursillo weekend, the next women’s weekend is scheduled for Oct. 6-9, with a men’s weekend a week later, Oct. 13-16, at the Duncan Center. The men’s weekend is already almost full, so applications need to be in soon. For applications and information, contact Pam Anderson, 954-802-2207 or Pamapama213@aol.com.

The Net online—The April/May and February/March issues of The Net are available in PDF form on the diocesan website. Go to http://www.diosef.org/thenet.html. These are large documents and will take time to download. The Net received two Polly Bond Awards at the annual Episcopal Communicators conference last month.

Conscientious Objectors—The Episcopal Church maintains on its Ministries with Young People site a page with links and information on Conscientious Objection to military service, as well as a form that young people can use to register as Conscientious Objectors. This registry exists primarily for persons who would be eligible for any future military draft, but others might want to be included as a matter of witness. For information, go to http://www.episcopalchurch.org/50917_ENG_HTM.htm?menupage=51908. A summary of Episcopal Church statements on war and peace is available at http://www.episcopalpeacefellowship.org/4-Resources/InfoGuides/CrossBefore.htm .
