Help for Cuban church—Bishop Frade is offering everyone in our diocese the opportunity to help rebuild the Episcopal Church in Bermeja, Matanzas, Cuba--a parish that he and other members of our mission team visited last month. The congregation needs $60,000 to replace its dilapidated wooden building with a new church, parish hall and rectory, and the bishop is asking that our congregations and parishioners help raise these funds. A letter from Bishop Frade to all parishes will give more information about this Lent/Easter appeal, but meanwhile, donations can be made online at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org. Click on donate and designate your gift for “Assistance for church in Cuba”.

"Lift Every Voice"—If you missed last April’s workshop on African-American Sacred Music led by Dr. Horace Clarence Boyer--or if you enjoyed it so much that you’d like to do it again--the “Lift Every Voice” workshop is back by popular demand, this year at St. Benedict’s, Plantation, on Mar. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $10 ($5 for students) and includes lunch. Dr. Boyer, general editor of the Lift Every Voice hymnal and professor emeritus of music at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is known throughout the Episcopal Church as a compelling teacher, storyteller-and gospel singer. For more information and to reserve your space at the workshop, call St. Benedict’s, 954-473-6578.

Diocesan Acolyte Festival—The annual diocesan Acolyte Festival will be held Mar. 4, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at St. Thomas, Coral Gables. Online registration ended Feb. 24, but acolytes not pre-registered may still attend; the cost at the door is $10, and includes lunch. Every five youth participating should be accompanied by one adult. The festival is an opportunity for acolytes from all parishes in the diocese to share fellowship, learning and worship.  Acolyte teams are asked to bring their vestments, torches, processional crosses and thuribles for the festival Eucharist.

Peer Ministry Training—will be offered for students in grades 9-12 Mar. 10-12, 2006, at DaySpring Camp and Conference Center in Ellenton, Fla.  For adults, the training will be part of the Youth Ministers Retrreat and Training weekend April 21-23 at the Duncan Center. For additional information, contact Canon Terrence Taylor, ttaylor@diosef.org or 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 28.

Smaltz Lecture Weekend at Bethesda--The Very Rev. George Werner, standing president of the House of Deputies and retired dean of Trinity Cathedral, Pittsburgh, Penn., will be the speaker for the John C. and Elizabeth Smaltz Lecture Weekend at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach, Mar. 17-18. The theme for Werner’s lectures will be “Scripture for this Moment in God’s History”. On Friday, Mar. 17, diocesan clergy are invited to a discussion with Werner, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by Eucharist and lunch. The weekend’s events also include a reception and dinner on Friday evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by Werner’s talk on “The Journey of Paul from Zealot to Lover”. The cost is $25. The Saturday morning program offers a breakfast at 8:15 a.m., followed by Werner’s talk on “The 15th Chapter of Luke:  An Unexpected Demonstration of Costly Love”. The cost for the Saturday program is $10. Reservations are required for all events; call the church office, 561-655-4554 for information and reservations. Seating is limited, so the reservation deadline is Mar. 13.

Parochial Reports and Key Personnel Forms—Parochial Reports and Key Personnel Forms are now past due. These need to be completed and submitted online—go to www.episcopalsouthflorida.org and look under “Diocesan Forms and Reports” for forms and instructions.

Holy Week Clergy Day—The annual Holy Week Clergy Day with Chrism Eucharist (Blessing of the Oils) and renewal of ordination vows will be Tuesday, Apr. 11, beginning at 10 a.m. at Trinity Cathedral. The speaker will be the Rev. John L. Kater, acting president and dean, Church Divinity School of the Pacific. In order to have an accurate count for lunch, you will need to register by Apr. 4 at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org/register.html .

Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Weekend-- An Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Workshop (ECLW) will be held in at the Duncan Center Apr. 21-23. Cursillistas who are interested in participating should contact local coordinator Bob Anderson, rander5256@aol.com or 954-566-3598.

Good Friday Offering—For the past 84 years the Episcopal Church has designated the Good Friday offering for the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. Current events continue to make the needs of that ministry obvious and urgent. Offering materials, including a poster, a bulletin shell and offering envelopes, can be ordered online at www.episcopalchurch.org/agr/friday.html or by calling 800-903-5544.

Positions at Seafarers’ House--Seafarers' House has begun its search for a new Executive Director and a new Chaplain. Candidates wishing to make application for either position may do so by visiting the Seafarers' House website at www.seafarershouse.org. Job descriptions, application materials and procedures are detailed at the Employment section of the site. The search committee will accept complete applications through Mar. 24 at 5 p.m.

Hurricane relief—There are many ways to help those affected by the 2005 hurricanes, on the Gulf Coast, throughout the Caribbean and Central America and in our own diocese. Donations can be made online by clicking on “donations” at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org, or checks can be made payable to Diocese of Southeast Florida, marked for “hurricane relief” and mailed to 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132. Donations can be made to Episcopal Relief and Development at http://www.er-d.org/ or mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development, PO Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101. To donate by phone, please call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129. Updates on ways to help can be found by clicking the “Hurricane Response” link on the front page of the website.

Help for Alaska church—On Mar. 12, the historic Church of the Holy Trinity in Juneau, Alaska, burned to the ground. The 110-year-old church was not only a focus of community service, but also served the nearly one million cruise ship passengers who come thought Juneau every summer. The church was insured, but insurance will not cover all the costs of rebuilding, so gifts of money, vessels, vestments books and other church goods would be gratefully received. Donations may be sent to: Holy Trinity Restoration Fund, 411 Gold St., Juneau, AK 99801. For more information, go to www.trinityjuneau.org.

Special Appeal for Liberia—Bishop Ottley is one of ten bishops who have launched an appeal for dioceses and congregations to pledge financial support for the Episcopal Church of Liberia as it seeks to rebuild its congregations and communities shattered by more than two decades of civil war. Click here for more information on how your congregation can participate in this mission outreach partnership with the Church in Liberia.

Paul Edwards cartoons and meditations—“The Rev” cartoons and meditations by Canon Paul Edwards, who led last fall’s clergy conference, are available on our website for viewing and downloading. Go to http://www.diosef.org/therev_cartoons.html to see what “The Rev” has to say for the seasons of Lent and Easter, as well as his new “Twenty Reasons Not to Leave the Church”. Canon Edwards has given permission for these to be reprinted in church bulletins and newsletters.

Seminarians—Please continue to keep our seminarians to your prayer list; they need the support of their diocesan family as they prepare for ordained ministry. Currently attending seminary from our diocese are: Judith Alexis (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest (ETSS); Ian Barnes (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), St. Vincent de Paul; Matthew Cowden (Venerable Bede), Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS); Anne Harris (Chapel of St. Andrew), VTS; Scott Jones (St. Margaret’s, Miami Lakes), ETSS; Jeannie Martinez (St. Mary Magdalene, Coral Springs), VTS; Valerie Miller (St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton), Episcopal Divinity School (EDS); Scott Petersen (St. Benedict’s, Plantation), VTS; Wendy Tobias (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), VTS; and Rohani Weger (St. Simon’s, Miami), ETSS.

PLSE--The PLSE ("pulse") program is an interdenominational effort with the dual purpose of nurturing young persons who want to explore a possible call to vocational church leadership, and developing a mentoring-guiding-shepherding process that encourages and lifts up those who explore or discern a call. PLSE maintains an interactive website, www.theplse.org, for young persons exploring a call to ministry and the people (including congregations) who support them. Diocesan youth ministry encourages high school and college students to visit the site and sign up online to become part of the conversation. Young persons who enroll in the site earn the title “PLSE Leader”—a good addition to college and job applications.

Labyrinth programs with Lauren Artress—The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the organization that has reintroduced the labyrinth and walking meditation as spiritual tools, will be in residence at the Duncan Center for a series of labyrinth-related programs May 26-30, 2006. In addition to leading a labyrinth retreat May 26 and 27, Artress will offer a day with clergy, spiritual directors and retreat leaders on May 28 and labyrinth facilitator training May 29-30.

Grants available for Episcopal employees’ children--St. Andrew's-Sewanee School in Sewanee, Tenn., has special grants available for boarding students whose parents are Episcopal employees. The SAS Episcopal Employees Grant Program reduces tuition by 40% for boarding students who are children of full-time clergy and lay employees of Episcopal organizations. To learn more about St. Andrew's-Sewanee School visit the website at www.sasweb.org. If you are interested in applying, or in finding out more about financial aid contact the Admissions Office at 866-513-8290 (toll free) or email admissions@sasweb.org .
