Nobody
likes to think about it, but hurricane season is here, and
forecasters are promising another busy
summer. After last year’s experience, we hope every parish has plans in
place to back up computer files, prepare the church property for a storm
and stay in touch with parishioners in the event of any emergency. Please
be sure that the diocesan office has phone numbers (particularly a cell
phone number) for someone in the parish—in addition to the rector—who will
be your contact person after a hurricane or other disaster.
The
Diocesan Office has arranged for a file-server at a remote
site and has also completed improved back-up procedures,
so that the diocesan database, financial records and other
important files will be secure in the event of a storm. If
the office should be damaged or inaccessible, we will be
able to work from the remote site as soon as electricity
is available. If a hurricane threatens our diocese, we’ll
provide emergency contact numbers for you to reach members
of the diocesan staff, as we did last year.
Meanwhile, our calendar provides some more welcome kinds
of busy-ness for the coming months.

The ONE Campaign--The Episcopal Church is
among the groups that have endorsed the ONE Campaign,
an effort urging government action to overcome extreme
poverty, starvation and the global AIDS pandemic.
In the ONE video spot, which has aired on many TV
channels, Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold joins celebrities
like Bono, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz in appealing
for support for making issues of worldwide poverty
a priority in this country’s policies. For more
information on the ONE campaign, go to www.one.org.
Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ--
On May 16, in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St.
James in Seattle, Wash., the Anglican-Roman Catholic
International Commission (ARCIC), the official instrument
of theological dialogue between the Catholic Church
and the Churches of the Anglican Communion, issued
a statement resulting from its five years of study
and dialogue on the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary
in the Church. The complete text of Mary: Grace and
Hope in Christ, can be found at http://www.ecumenism.net/archive/arcic/mary_en.htm
and some background material on ARCIC and the document
is at http://www.anglicancommunion.org/acns/articles/39/75/acns3978a.cfm

Cathedral Bookstore, 800-597-9557, or trinitybookstore@juno.com
.
Follow-up
on Multicultural Ministry—The theme of the Bishop’s Spring Conference, “One
Body--Many Members” will be the focus of two two-day
follow-up workshops, scheduled for Sept. 10 and 24 at

and 12 at the Duncan Center. Watch for additional information
on these. If you didn’t get one of the bright orange

the E-Church logo and the words “Embrace Everyone”, or
if you’d like to share the message, these can be ordered
for $2 apiece from the diocesan office. Call 800-268-9993
or 305-373-0881, or email gail@diosef.org.
New
Duncan Center Programs—With
the completion of the Stahl Building and the Schofield
Chapel, the Duncan Center and the arrival of new program
coordinator Veneta Lorraine-Poirier, the Duncan Center
will be offering a variety of new programs. The first
is “Spirituality
and Personality”, a retreat that uses
the Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator as a tool for
discovering the spiritual practices best suited to each
individual’s temperament and needs. The retreat, led
by Fr. Perry Fuller, associate at Grace Church, West
Palm Beach, will be offered June 24-25 and again Sept.
30-Oct. 1. Another summer opportunity at the Duncan Center
is the Pray
and Play Weekend: Summer Camp for Adults,
July 15-17. For information, call 561-496-4130.
Graduate information—Canon for Youth and Young Adult Ministry Terrence
Taylor is asking all rectors to make sure that the diocese
has information on the future plans of 2005 high school
graduates in our congregations. The diocesan youth webpage, http://www.diosef.org/youth/index.htm ,
has a form for this information that can be completed online
or downloaded to mail or fax. Canon Taylor will forward
this contact information to the appropriate campus or military
chaplain’s office or local congregation, so that our young
adults who have left their home parishes for study, military
service or work will be able to find a faith community
wherever they go.
Anti-Racism Training—The Diocesan Anti-Racism Commission has announced
an Anti-Racism Training workshop for Nov. 5 at St.
Paul’s, Delray Beach. This training, which was mandated
by General Convention for all clergy and lay leaders,
was first offered in this diocese last November for
diocesan staff, Executive Board and Standing Committee.
The Commission intends to make these training workshops
ongoing throughout the diocese and to involve as many
people as possible. Watch for more details on the
November workshop and future dates and locations for
the training.
Ecumenical Youth Event—“Faith
in 3-D”, an event for youth in grades 6-12 co-sponsored
by the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church USA
and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, will be held
at Disney World, Jan. 13-16, 2006. Faith in 3-D will
explore what we have in common as Christians and how
we celebrate our differences. There will also be time
to participate in the Disney Youth Education Series,
in which young people can experience life issues,
world cultures and future opportunities. For more
information, go to www.fathin3d.org.
Revisions to Diocesan Canons--Any revisions to the
Canons to be proposed at Diocesan Convention must be presented
to the Constitutions and Canons Committee "not less
than 90 days prior to the next Convention", which
means not later than July 20, and then be presented
to the delegates "not less than 30 days prior to Convention",
which would be no later than Sept. 20.
Licenses to Officiate—A reminder to non-canonically
resident clergy: Licenses to officiate in the diocese must
be renewed annually. If you are officiating by permission
in the Diocese of Southeast Florida and do not have a license
for 2005, please contact Bishop Frade’s assistant, Sally
James, sally@diosef.org or 800-268-9993 or 205-373-0881,
ext. 20, as quickly as possible to request a license.
Helpful
resource--Here is the link to the National Church “Studying
Your Congregation & Community” webpage: http://12.0.101.88/ The
site allows you to display and print two charts and a community
demographic profile. The two charts track membership,
participation and giving over the most recently available
eleven years for your congregation and your diocese. These
data are from annual Parochial Reports. The community demographic
profile will give you a demographic overview of the zip code
area in which your church is located.
Episcopal
Church website survey—Revisions
continue to be made to the national website of the Episcopal
Church.
Now is your chance to express your opinion on how the site
is working and to give your ideas on what would make it a
more helpful, accessible and user-friendly resource. Go to
the “interim homepage” at www.episcopalchurch.org and
click on “Take a website survey” at the bottom
of the page. There are only 12 questions, and it will take
about five minutes.
Resources for parish communication and advertising—There are several websites
that offer helpful resources for publicizing the Episcopal
Church and the ministries of your parish. The “Groundwork” materials
from the national church are available in English at www.episcopalchurch.org/groundwork and
in Spanish at www.episcopalchurch.org/groundwork_56638_ENG_HTM.htm .
Information from the Episcopal Advertising Collaborative
is at www.episcopalchurch.org/adcollaborative ;
the Episcopal Media Center is at www.episcopalmediacenter.org ;
and the Church Ad Project is at www.churchad.com
Cursillo—If there is someone
you feel called to invite to be a candidate for a Cursillo
weekend, the next women’s weekend is scheduled for Oct.
6-9, with a men’s weekend a week later, Oct. 13-16, at
the Duncan Center. The men’s weekend is already almost
full, so applications need to be in soon. For applications
and information, contact Pam Anderson, 954-802-2207 or Pamapama213@aol.com .
