More staff changes—but these are not really new faces. Our receptionist, Jessy Cajina, returns from maternity leave June 2, but we’re happy to announce that Sally James will continue for a while as part of the Diocesan Office team, working on various projects.

Our new Youth Missioner, Terrence Taylor, will begin his ministry during the next two weeks. Terrence, a lifelong member of Christ Church, Coconut Grove (Miami), received a Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School on May 26 and will be ordained to the transitional diaconate (pending Standing Committee approval) on June 21 at Trinity Cathedral. All diocesan youth activities scheduled for summer and fall will continue as scheduled, and Terrence will go with youth and leaders from our diocese to both the Youth Conferences at Kanuga, Jun. 15-20 and the “Count Me Faithful” youth event Jul. 30-Aug. 3 at General Convention. While Terrence is away at these events—and until he begins his work—questions about youth events should be directed to Mary Cobiella, 800-268-9993, ext. 29, or mary@diosef.org.

Vacation Bible School—This issue includes a page listing many parishes’ schedules for summer Vacation Bible School or Bible Camp.

High School Graduates--The office of Young Adult and Higher Education Ministries of the Episcopal Church wants to stay in touch with high school graduates who are moving away from home for school or work, to help them find a church or campus ministry nearby and to give them information about events for young adults. There is a downloadable form at: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/myp/Attnhighschoolsen.htm that graduates can print and mail in if they'd like to be contacted with this kind of information. For questions, email dfenton@episcopalchurch.org.

New deacons—Five of our graduating seminarians will be ordained to the transitional diaconate (pending Standing Committee approval) June 21 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Cathedral: Gail Abbott (General); Thomas Bruttell (Berkeley at Yale); Christopher Schuller (Episcopal Divinity School); Terrence Taylor (Berkeley at Yale); and Regina Walsh-Minor (General). Other ordination dates will be set later in the summer.

Parish Checklist—This issue includes a checklist of business and administrative procedures for parishes. These are not only an important part of the routine operations of a church, but are also essential as congregations plan for growth and new ministries.

Bishop’s Awards—On Nov. 22, 2003, at Trinity Cathedral, Bishop Frade will present the first Bishop’s Awards for Lay Ministry. Each congregation is asked to choose one person it wishes to honor for outstanding ministry in the parish; this might be someone who has served faithfully for many years, or a relatively new parishioner who’s jumped right into a leadership role. You know who your outstanding ministers are—and although it may be hard to choose just one, remember, this will be an annual award, so there will be chances to honor many people. Names of those to be honored must be submitted to bishop Frade’s secretary, Mary Sinisi, by Oct. 15.

Hurricane preparedness—In preparation for hurricane season, all congregations should review emergency plans—including plans for backup of all computer files and securing important documents. Please make sure that the Diocesan Office has emergency contact numbers—cellphones, or numbers outside south Florida--for your parish’s clergy and lay leaders.

Prayers for the Church—In your intercessory prayers at Sunday services, please add to your regular prayers for “Leo and James, our bishops” a prayer for “Bryan and Paul, our archdeacons, and all members of the diocesan staff”; we all need the support of each other’s prayers for our ministries.

Human Needs Grant Reports--All ministries that have received a Human Needs Grant for 2003 are reminded to report the use of those grant funds by Sept. 1 to Fr. Tom Ryan, convener of Human Needs Ministries, 772-334-0610 or frryan@inetw.net. Eligibility for future grants requires reporting of all funds received through the Human Needs Grant program. The funds for 2003 have been expended. Ministries seeking a grant should look for an announcement for applications in October of 2003 for grants from the 2004 Diocesan Budget.

“Jesus for Every Generation”—The Duncan Center will present a seminar June 9-11 led by Rev. Carl Eeman, author of Generations of Faith, on ministry with different generations. Cost is $250 for the conference and $175 for lodging and meals ($90 for commuter). Register by May 19 at duncanregister@earthlink.net or by fax at 561-496-1726. For more information or to request a brochure, call 561-496-4130.

Training for Christian Educators—The diocesan Commission on Christian Formation and Education is offering new opportunities for Christian educators to participate in “Faith Is Caught More Than It is Taught: A Teacher Certification Program”:  Aug. 22-23, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Pompano Beach; Sept. 19-20, All Angels, Miami Springs; and Sept. 26-27, Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines. There will also be a Child in Our Hands Conference, Nov. 6-8, at St. Martin-in-the-Fields. For additional information, email the Commission at DiosefCCFEd@aol.com

Youth Ministry Leader Training—Youth leaders are encouraged to take advantage of a training opportunity offered by our neighboring diocese of Central Florida; the Gearing Up for Youth Ministry Conference will be held Aug. 8-9 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Winter Park, Florida. “This conference is designed…to inspire, equip and empower people for the challenging work of sharing Christ with young people. If you have volunteers or a youth ministry staff, if you are part-time or full-time, lay or ordained, or are just getting started with your youth ministry efforts this conference will help.”

Summer Camp information—Summer camps for students from elementary through high school are available at Dayspring in the Diocese of Southwest Florida and Camp Wingmann in Avon Park, FL. Information is available on these websites: www.dioceseswfla.org and www.campwingmann.org.

Florida Day at the National Cathedral—It’s time to begin making plans to participate in the quadrennial Florida Day at Washington National Cathedral, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003. The weekend will include a retreat on Friday, Sept. 19; tours of Cathedral and grounds on Saturday, Sept. 20; Holy Eucharist at 11 a.m. Sunday, with clergy and acolytes in procession, and reception following; evensong at 4 p.m. Sunday; Healing Service at 6:30 p.m. We would like all congregations in the diocese to be represented; begin by contacting Joanna Wragg (jwragg@wraggcasas.com) or Gail McShane at the Diocesan Office (gail@diosef.org) with the name of a volunteer coordinator from your parish for this event. For more information on Washington National Cathedral, go to www.nationalcathedral.org.

Transitional Ministry Course—The Duncan Center will sponsor the Basics for Transitional Ministry course from the Interim Ministry Network, beginning this fall; the first phase of the program will be Sept. 15-19. For information, call the Duncan Center, 561-496-4130

EFM Mentor Training—will be offered at the Duncan Center again this year. The dates are Dec. 5-7, beginning Friday at 4 p.m., and ending Sunday by 3 p.m. All active mentors whose last training was 12 to 18 months ago, and anyone desiring to take Mentor training are welcome to attend.  For information, contact Bill Thorstad, 561-392-3417, or by email, Mjollnir5@aol.com

Senior workers--An organization called Experience Works, which provides job training and placement for workers over 55, will pay the workers it places with non-profit organizations. For information, go to www.experienceworks.org, or call the West Palm Beach office of Experience Works at 561-432-7588--or talk with Carry or Pam at St. Andrew's Residence in West Palm Beach (561-655-1504) which has employees provided by this organization.

Episcopal Relief  & Development—A reminder--each rector or priest/deacon-in-charge of a parish is asked to appoint a representative who can assist in talking to the congregation monthly and encouraging donations to Episcopal Relief & Development. This network of representatives would also be in place to help coordinate our response in times of emergencies. Please send names, phone numbers and email addresses to diocesan ER & D coordinator Deacon Vivian Hopkins at Christ Episcopal Church, 305-442-8542 or email chrepch.aol.com. Donations to Episcopal Relief & Development may be sent to Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101.

Congratulations--to the Rev. Alison Harrity and her husband Mark on the birth of their second child, Catherine Elizabeth (to be called Libby) on May 31!
