Many of you, especially those associated with
parish day schools, have been asking when we would again
offer “Coverage K” training for the prevention of child and
adolescent sexual abuse. “Coverage K” no longer exists, but
the Church Pension Fund has now developed Safeguarding
God’s Children, “a training and education program
to assist dioceses, congregations, and other Episcopal entities
and other groups that are concerned about preventing the
sexual abuse of children generally and in ministries and
church activities for children and youth”.
Representatives from our diocese attended workshops
this spring to prepare them to present this program locally.
It will be offered on Sept. 7, from 1-4 p.m., at the Duncan
Center, just before the Clergy
Conference begins. Registration
is necessary and is available here on the diocesan website.
Because protecting our children is such an essential
responsibility of the church, this training will be required for
clergy. By Dec. 31, 2005, all clergy, both canonically
resident and non-canonically resident, must be certified
as having completed the full three-hour training in order
to continue officiating in this diocese. Additional workshops
will be offered between now and the end of next year, but
Bishop Frade urges as many clergy as possible to take advantage
of this opportunity to complete the training.
