By now every parish should have received three copies of "Groundwork: Digging Deep for Change and Growth," a packet of practical resources for hospitality, evangelism and outreach, designed to help congregations do “groundwork” for the national television ad campaign planned for back-to-school season this year. Please don’t file this, but instead make sure there are people in your parish reading this material and deciding how best to use it. In addition to preparing for the ad campaign, “Groundwork” provides important tools for our diocesan mission: “To make known to all people the transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, including ALL, excluding none”. The Groundwork resources are also available online in English at www.episcopalchurch.org/groundwork and in Spanish at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/groundwork_56638_ENG_HTM.htm

Diocesan Office voicemail unavailable—The voicemail system at the Diocesan Office is in the shop for repair, so there will be no answer when you call before or after office hours, and you will not be able to leave voicemail messages. Until the system is either repaired or replaced, we will make sure that the phone is answered throughout the day. Any messages you leave with our receptionist, Jessy Soria—or any other person—will be delivered.

Updating “Parish Finder”—Can seekers online find your church? Click on “Parish Finder” (it’s in the set of buttons just under the scrolling pictures) on our website and check your parish’s information to be sure it’s up to date. If not, here’s how to update your parish information in Church Publishing’s Episcopal Clerical Directory database, the source for “Parish Finder”: Mail or fax a written update on parish letterhead, accompanied by the signature of the clergyperson in charge (or a parish officer) as authorization, to: Susan T. Erdey, Director of Electronic Publishing, Church Publishing Inc., 445 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10016, fax # fax: 212-779-3392.

Help for victims of tsunami in South Asia—Episcopal Relief and Development continues to provide assistance in the areas affected by the Dec. 26 tsunamis, and will be working with dioceses and other relief agencies to begin to help with long-term needs. There is now a special "Crisis Center" section on the ER-D website, www.er-d.org/tsunami, featuring program updates and such resources as bulletin inserts. You can donate immediately online at http://erd.servicenetwork.com/Donate/Donate.asp or mail donations to Episcopal Relief and Development, c/o Emergency Relief Fund, PO Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101. You can also send checks to Diocese of Southeast Florida, 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132, marked for “South Asia tsunami relief”, or donate online at www.diosef.org (click on “donations” and scroll down to “other contribution” to indicate that your donation is for tsunami victims). We will forward these funds to ER-D. Please pray for the thousands of families affected by this disaster and those who are working to help them.

Report of Bishop’s Council of Advice—The Bishop’s Council of Advice on Human Sexuality has completed its report, which is now posted on the website at http://www.diosef.org/hsr/index.html The report offers many resources for further conversation on these issues.

SEFEF Emergency Fund--An anonymous donation has enabled the Southeast Florida Episcopal Foundation to establish a new fund for emergency property repair and restoration. The immediate purpose of this fund is to assist congregations and individual parishioners to repair the damages from last fall’s hurricanes, but the Foundation intends the fund also to be resource for parishes in the event of damage from other disasters such as fires, lightning strikes, flooding or vandalism. For information about applying for grants from this fund, call the foundation office at 561-799-6424. CLICK HERE FOR APPLICATION IN PDF FORMAT.

Absalom Jones Service--The 20th Diocesan Absalom Jones Service will be Saturday, Feb. 26 at Trinity Cathedral, beginning at 10 a.m. The preacher will be the Rev. Canon Richard L. Marquess Barry, DD, rector of the Historic St. Agnes. The service commemorates the life and ministry of Absalom Jones, the first Episcopal priest of African descent, and celebrates the ministries of all black clergy and laity in our diocese. Gibson Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians will follow the service at the Radisson Miami Hotel, located at 1601 Biscayne Blvd. (formerly the Omni Hotel). IV Total Immersion Spanish Language Weekend--In conjunction with Province IV Hispanic Ministries, the Diocese of Mississippi offers the third annual Total Immersion Spanish Language Weekend at the Duncan M. Gray Episcopal Camp and Conference Center, near Canton, MS.  On the weekend of Feb. 25-27, 2005, licensed instructors in the Command (tm) Method will come to Gray Center to work with Spanish speakers of all ages and abilities, from the beginner to the fluent conversationalist. Special curriculums are available for clergy and medical professionals, and also for individual missioners who participate in trips to regions of the world where Spanish is the primary language.  Applications are available from www.dioms.org under "The Diocese Upfront," or from Canon Yamily Bass-Choate, 601-969-9461, yamily@standrewscathedral.org or from the diocesan Communications Desk, 601-948-5954 x107, lauttonberry@dioms.org. The weekend is open to all, and scholarships are available.

Plan for tomorrow—it’s almost here! You can register online now for the Church Pension Fund’s "Planning for Tomorrow" conference for active diocesan clergy and their spouses Mar. 11-12 at the Hilton Deerfield Beach. Go to www.diosef.org/register.html and sign up to join Bishop Frade for this opportunity to develop life and financial planning skills. The cost is $100, which covers the participant’s share of room and meals; most of the conference cost is underwritten by the Pension Fund. The Pension Fund will cover the cost of baby-sitting or eldercare in your home for anyone who needs that in order to attend. Arrangements for this care must be made prior to conference. For information about the content of Planning for Tomorrow conferences, go to http://www.cpg.org/cms/content/580_generic.cfm.

Wardens and Treasurers Conference—Rectors, be sure your parish officers have this conference date on their calendars—Mar. 19, at St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton. The format for this year’s conference is being revised in order to provide as much information as possible to help wardens and treasurers carry out their responsibilities for conducting the business of the parish effectively and efficiently. You will receive additional information about the conference soon.

Holy Week Clergy Day—The annual Holy Week Clergy Day and Chrism Eucharist (Blessing of the Oils) will be Mar. 22, beginning at 10 a.m., at Trinity Cathedral. The speaker will be the Rev. Christopher Bryan, professor of New Testament at the School of Theology at the University of the South. The Chrism Eucharist will also be the occasion of the formal installation of the Ven. Mary Gray-Reeves as Archdeacon for Deployment, the Rev. Howarth “Hap” Lewis as Canon for Deacons and the Rev. Terrence Taylor as Canon for Youth. Registration for the day will be online.

“Lift Every Voice”—The diocese is offering a rare opportunity for parish musicians, choir members and anyone else who loves singing--“Lift Every Voice”: a workshop celebrating African-American Sacred Music, led by Dr. Horace Clarence Boyer, Saturday, Apr. 30, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., at Grace Church, West Palm Beach. The cost is $5 ($8 after Apr. 15) and includes lunch. Dr. Boyer, general editor of the Lift Every Voice hymnal and professor emeritus of music at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is known throughout the Episcopal Church as a compelling teacher, storyteller—and gospel singer. For more information, call Grace Church, 561-845-6060.

Episcopal Clerical Directory--Clergy, watch your mailboxes for the 2005 Episcopal Clerical Directory clergy and institutional update questionnaires, which will be mailed in early February. This is your bi-annual opportunity to review all of the information Church Pension Group currently has stored in the database about you and your parish and to make corrections and additions to that information.

Tips for online registration—When you complete an online registration for a diocesan event, you should immediately see a page that shows you exactly what you entered on the registration form and tells you to print the page for your records. If you do not see such a page or receive an error message, your registration form is incomplete or incorrect in some way, and you have not actually registered. In that case, go back to the registration page and try again. If you are having difficulty with online payment for an event, all registrations for which payment is required offer the option of registering online but paying by mail; the link for this option is always near the top of the form, just below the name of the event.

New “no-show” policy—At the December clergy conference, 11 persons who had registered neither attended nor canceled their registrations. Even for events for which there is no charge to participants, the Duncan Center (or whatever the venue is) must charge the diocese per person registered, so the “no-shows” for that conference cost all of us $800. We have been incurring these kinds of losses from nearly every diocesan event in the past few years. We know there will always be last minute illnesses and emergencies that prevent a few persons from attending events for which they are registered; but to be good stewards of diocesan funds, we now need to institute a strict policy on “no shows”: Anyone registered for a diocesan event--including events for which there is no cost to participants--who does not either attend or cancel in a timely manner, will be billed for the per-person amount that the venue charges the diocese.

EYE—The national Episcopal Youth Event (for young people who have completed grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 by Spring 2005 and have not already attended college) will be held July 26-31 on the campus of Berea College, Berea, Ky. Our diocese is initially allowed to register 12 youth and three adults, but may be allowed more. Youth interested in attending should contact Diocesan Youth Missioner Fr. Terrence Taylor, ttaylor@diosef.org or 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 28. For additional information go to www.eye2005.org

New directory on Episcopal Church website—The national Episcopal Church website, www.episcopalchurch.org, has just added an A to Z directory that makes navigating the large and complex site much simpler. Go to www.episcopalchurch.org/atoz.htm

Items for Eucharistic Visitors--Morehouse Publishing has produced double-sided, laminated Communion service sheets for use by Eucharistic Visitors. To be shared with communicants at home, hospitals, nursing facilities or other institutions, these service sheets follow the Distribution of Holy Communion by Eucharistic Visitors to Persons Who Are Ill or Infirm, Rites I and II, from The Book of Occasional Services. Also new for Eucharistic Visitors is a pin that identifies them when they bring Communion to parishioners who can't be present in Church. Both of these items are available by calling 1-800-877-0012 or by ordering on-line at www.morehousepublishing.com

Congratulations—to Bishop James Ottley and Lillian on the birth of their third grandchild and first granddaughter, Natalie, born Jan. 19 to the Ottley’s daughter Irina and her husband!
