When you go to the diocesan website, www.diosef.org, as of January 31st, you’ll notice something different—less clutter on the home page, and, we hope, clearer clues to finding the information you need. Our Electronic Communications Committee has been working for several months with our webmaster, Paula Jacobs, to revise the “site navigation”, the way information is organized on the site. You’ll see more buttons on the left side of the home page, and each of those has a drop-down menu showing the additional categories you’ll find linked to that part of the site. Most of the postings that have been on the front page have been moved, either to “News/Events” or to categories that we think will be obvious (i.e., items related to the diocesan vision and mission will found in a section called “Vision and Mission” under “Who We Are”). Please let us know how this new road map to our part of the information superhighway works for you—it will always be a work in progress.

Parochial Reports and Key Personnel Lists—The forms for filing these reports are now on the website—the Parochial Report form is at http://www.diosef.org/LoginParochialRpt.php and the Key Personnel is at https://www.amerisurf.com/diosef/keypersonnel.html. Both reports can be filed online. Posted with the Parochial Report form are printable worksheets and instructions; please print these first, and do your work on them before completing the online form. Also, please check the forms carefully before hitting “submit”; we don’t yet have the system set up for you to retrieve and correct a form once it’s been submitted. If you do need to make a correction, you will have to resubmit the entire form, and let us know you’re doing that.

The ‘E’ Church is coming! The Bishop’s Spring Conference, Mar. 26-27, at St. Mark the Evangelist, Ft. Lauderdale, will feature two full days (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) of presentations by author and consultant Tex Sample and the Rev. Charles Fulton, director of Congregational Development for the Episcopal Church and president of the Church Building Fund. There will also be a program for youth in grades 9-12, featuring a lock-in, a talent show and a media workshop, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday evening and going through the day on Saturday. Childcare (for pre-registered children, ages 5-12) will be offered on Saturday for $5. Complete information and registration are available on the diocesan website or from your parish “E-church” coordinator.

Clergy Retreat--The annual clergy retreat will be Feb. 9-12, at Our Lady of Florida, Lantana. The retreat leader will be the Rev. Julia Gatta, vicar of St. Paul’s, Windham, Conn. Dr. Gatta has been an instructor at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and is known as a spiritual director, retreat leader and award-winning preacher. Registration for the retreat is available on the diocesan website.

Absalom Jones Service—The annual Absalom Jones Service, which commemorates the first Episcopal priest of African descent and celebrates the ministries of black clergy and laity in our diocese, will be held Feb. 21, at 10 a.m., at Trinity Cathedral. The preacher will be the Rt. Rev. Herbert Thompson, bishop of Southern Ohio. The service will be followed by a fashion show and luncheon at the Radisson Hotel, 1601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami (in the former Omni complex). Cost for the luncheon is $40, and proceeds will benefit the UBE scholarship fund. For additional information call Ellen Bethel, 305-752-1719 or Kathy Walker, 305-579-6184.

CarnivaleThe Youth Carnavale with the Bishops, for grades 9-12, will be Feb. 21 at St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton--Mardi Gras costumes or semiformal dress; cost is $12 pre-registered or $15 at the event. C A N C E L L E D Start Up/Start Over—A Start Up/Start Over seminar in Spanish will be held Mar. 1-6, 2004, at the Duncan Center, and the next Start Up/Start Over seminar in English will be held April 26-30, 2004, at DaySpring Episcopal Conference Center in Ellenton, FL (near Sarasota). For registration and additional information, go to http://www.episcopalchurch.org/congdev/Development/StartUp/future.html

Train the Trainers Conference-The Church Pension Fund is offering a conference Mar. 12-13 in Orlando to provide training for use of the new CPG training material aimed at preventing child sexual abuse. Some who should probably attend are: sexual misconduct trainers, children's and youth ministry trainers, parochial school personnel and those considering integrating these materials into diocesan educational and training programs. The registration fee is $90; this does not include transportation or lodging. Complete information is available at: http://www.cpg.org/registration/safeguarding2/dsp_intro.cfm

Keep us informed—when clergy, members of clergy families or lay leaders in the parish or diocese are in the hospital. We’re reminding you, just as rectors remind their parishioners--please have someone call to let the bishops know when any of our clergy or lay leaders are ill. (Remember, Bishop Frade says we don’t do telepathy!)

Online registration—Some of you have experienced problems paying online to register for diocesan events. We’re all still learning how to use this process, and we appreciate your reporting the difficulties you have, because it helps our “techies” look for ways to make the process more efficient. We’ve had a suggestion that you may find helpful: If your credit card is declined for any online purchase—not just on our website—check with the credit card company to see if they impose a daily limit on purchases. You may have several thousand dollars in available credit, but still be over the spending limit for a single day.

Seminary seniors--Seven seminarians from our diocese are scheduled to graduate this spring: Christina Encinosa, Venerable Bede, Coral Gables-General Seminary (GTS); Donna Hall, Holy Spirit, West Palm Beach-Seminary of the Southwest; Hyvenson Joseph, St. Nicholas, Pompano Beach-University of the South; Tyler Jones, Trinity Cathedral, Miami-GTS; Kevin Morris, Venerable Bede, Coral Gables-Berkeley at Yale; Corinna (Cori) Olson, St. Paul's, Delray Beach-GTS; and Deborah Self, St. David's in the Pines, Wellington-University of the South. Please keep these persons in your prayers as they seek a call to begin their ordained ministries. If you know of a position that might be available for a seminary graduate, contact Archdeacon Paul Rasmus at 561-656-0868 or paul@diosef.org.

Opportunities for discernment—Two opportunities, one for high school students and one for college-age young adults, will be offered in the coming months for young people to explore their possible vocations to ordained ministry. The Lilly Summer Institute at the University of the South (Sewanee) offers an eight-week program of vocational exploration, including a six-week internship, for college-age students. The program runs June 5-July 31, but applications are due by Feb. 23. Complete information and application forms are available online at http://www.sewanee.edu/lillyproj/lsdi.html. The Pathways to Ministry National High School Conference will be held Apr. 16-18 at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Dallas, Tex. For brochures and registration information, contact Martha Lang in the Pathways to Ministry office, (214) 363-5471, ext. 269, or mlang@saintmichael.org.

Benedictine Experience—In conjunction with the Friends of St. Benedict, the diocese will offer a Benedictine Experience at the Duncan Center, March 18-21, 2004, with the Rev. Lynn Ramshaw, formerly of this diocese, as the presenter. The cost for the weekend is $325, or $150 for commuters. For more information, call Patricia Wald, 954-752-4066.
