General Convention Notes-July 9, 2000

The Convention Center was closed and dark today, and no meetings were scheduled. Instead, an estimated 10,000 people-including young people atttending the ecumenical "Y2K4JC" conference taking place in nearby Boulder--packed Currigan Hall, next door to the Center, for the celebration of a Festival Eucharist.

And what a celebration it was, with a Convention Eucharist Choir, a smaller vocal group, a brass ensemble and a handbell choir! The preacher for the service was the Rt. Rev. Simon Chiwanga, bishop of Mpwapawa, Tanzania, and chair of the Anglican Consultative Council.

At the offertory the United Thank Offering representative from each diocese presented the UTO ingathering from her diocese; the offering from the service will be added to the UTO offerings, and used for UTO grants throughout the world.

When the service ended, many people lingered to sing with the choir "Amazing Grace", before going out into the park behind the auditorium for the next celebration-"A Celebration of Diversity", which included a young mariachi band, Native American dancers, bagpipes and a variety of foods, from Indian fry bread to tacos to ice cream.
