Episcopal 73rd General Convention in Denver
July 8, 2000

Notes from General Convention-July 8

The Episcopal Church in the United States of America has agreed to full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America!

In what Pamela Chinnis, president of the House of Deputies, called "an historic vote", the resolution to approve Called to Common Mission "overwhelmingly passed in both orders" (clergy and lay) this afternoon. The House of Bishops approved CCM yesterday.

Ms. Chinnis had urged the deputies to "refrain from any outburst that would be hurtful to our fellow deputies", so there was no reaction immediately after the vote, but later in the session the deputies joined in singing "A Mighty Fortress is Our God".

The House of Deputies elected its next president today. The Rev. George Werner, current vice president of the House, will succeed Pamela Chinnis as president. Fr. Werner was a seminary classmate of Bp. Schofield at Berkely Divinity School, and shortly after the election, Bp. Schofield came to the House of Deputies to offer public congratulations to his friend.

The House of Deputies also took time today for another important item: To applaud Cn. James Rasnick on his birthday!

The Delegation from the Sudan
Throughout the week, great concern has been expressed at this convention for the persecution of the Anglican Church in the Sudan, and for the sufferings of the Sudanese people. This delegation from the Sudan spoke at a meeting of the World Mission Legislative Committee on July 4, presenting an urgent plea for solidarity and support. Photo by Fr. Bryan Hobbs.

Last night at a banquet given by The Episcopal Network for Stewardship our deputy Manny Mesa (shown here with his wife Dalia) was honored as one of five "Apostles in Stewardship" for his work in stewardship education for Hispanics and development of stewardship materials in Spanish. Manny said stewardship education means helping people to find ways to "have the Lord in their hearts". He added, "I want to thank the Lord for this road he has put me on, and I hope he lets me continue to do what I do for a long time!"

Here are two photos by Ramon Aymerich from the banquet Saturday night where Manny Mesa was honored for stewardship work.
