Yesterday
afternoon the House of Deputies consented to the elections of
all new bishops, including our election of Bp. Frade. The other
new bishops were presented to the House of Deputies and then formally
escorted to be seated in the House of Bishops, but Bp. Frade,
of course, was already in the House of Bishops, so it was a rather
anti-climactic event for our deputies. It does mean, though, that
our election is now official!
Another action necessary for our transition process also took
place yesterday afternoon: The House of Bishops consented--reluctantly--to
Bp. Schofield's retirement. "There were a lot of 'no' votes,"
the bishop reported, "and the 'yeses' were more like 'yeh'."
His collegues are not eager to see him go.

You may be seeing reports from this convention on network news
this evening or in tomorrow's newspapers. Just before their lunch
break this morning the House of Bishops passed the resolution
approving Call to Common Mission, the document providing for closer
communion between the Episcopal church and the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America.
Bp. Frade told the House that he, as an "overseas bishop",
supports the CCM. "ou have planted many churches," he
said, "and you have planted many divisions. This is our chance
to replace the gift of division with the gift of unity...our chance
to respond to our Lord's prayer...to be one."
