Doing the Business of Convention…

Before the opening session is called to order, Communications Ministry Convener Fr. Bryan Hobbs (right) and Lea Crawford (left), make certain the computers are ready for the first-ever use of PowerPoint presentations to complement Convention reports.

Part of the business of Convention is saying goodbye—
here, to Executive Board members whose terms have ended:
(l-r) Deacon Virginia Landwer, Fr. Monte Tiller, Fr. Chris Kelly,
Fr. Bernard Griffith, Col. Norman Carey and Mr. Burnie Hughes.

--and saying welcome—here, to deacons ordained since last year’s Convention:
(l-r) Virginia Landwer (St. Columba, Marathon), Allison Harrity
(St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton), Mark Sims (Trinity Cathedral) and Jane Calderin
(Venerable Bede). (Note that Deacon Landwer managed within a few minutes to
be both thanked and dismissed as a lay representative
to Executive Board, and welcomed as a new deacon!)

There was also a special welcome for a special guest, the retired bishop of Cuba,
the Rt. Rev. Emilio Hernandez, introduced by Bishop Frade as a hero who spent 10 years
in prison for his faith—and as "Alejandro’s dad". Bishop Hernandez has come to live in Miami
to be near his two sons, one of whom is Fr. Alejandro (Alex) Hernandez, rector of Holy Cross, Miami.

Part of the work of Convention is discussion on proposed resolutions for diocesan action.
Here Adrienne Waldron of St. John’s, Hollywood, asks for clarification on a resolution
dealing with funding for disaster preparedness.

Disaster Committee Chair Burnie Hughes of St. Andrew’s, Miami, explains the intent of the resolution.

One of the most important parts of the work of Convention is the opportunity for
members of the diocesan family to spend time together. Here Peter Wallace (left) of St.
Ambrose, Ft. Lauderdale, and Al Ferguson (right) of Holy Family, Miami, converse during a break.
